OK, well – technically speaking “Cosmetic Dentistry” is not on the list of dental specialties.
Dr. Randall Brucken and Dr. Lawrence Stubbs are general dentists in Lafayette, Indiana – who love doing cosmetic dental work.
While some offices might attempt to specialize in esthetic cases, Comfort Dental remains dedicated to cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
After becoming a general dentist, there are Nine Recognized Specialties requiring additional formal education.
The More Common Specialties & Their Most Common Procedure
- Endodontics – ROOT CANALS – This field focuses on tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth. They perform root canal treatments and re-treatments.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – REMOVE TEETH – These dentists treat a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the mouth. Oral surgeons remove injured or diseased teeth, treat oral cancers and issues with the joints of the jaw .
- Orthodontics – STRAIGHEN TEETH – These dentists focus on the straightening of teeth, as well as facial growth.
- Periodontics– TREAT GUMS – This field of dentistry specializes in treating the gums and supporting tissues of the teeth and surrounding bone.
- Prosthodontics – REPLACE TEETH – This field focuses on the replacement of teeth with dentures, bridges and dental implants.
- Pediatric Dentistry – TREAT CHILDREN – These dentists specialize in the dental treatment of children and adolescents.
The More Obscure Dental Specialties
- Public Health Dentistry – This field of dentistry is involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the dental health of populations, rather than individuals.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology – This specialty is the study and x-ray reading of oral and maxillofacial diseases. They are trained in reading and interpreting x-rays of the head and neck.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology – This field studies, diagnoses, and sometimes treats oral and maxillofacial related diseases.
Some may not realize that General Dentists can perform procedures within ANY of these specialties, if they choose. However, as of right now a dentist cannot truly “specialize” in cosmetic dentistry.
How Can Dentists Be at the Top of Their Game in Cosmetic Procedures?
By making sure they are extremely well educated in the best dental techniques and new technologies. This is a priority of Comfort Dental. Dr. Brucken will be attending all-day continuing education this Friday.
